Longest side at most (pixels)

JPG, WebP and AVIF are written again at the quality; PNGs keep at most the colors picked (photos may show slight grain, logos and screenshots rarely change). 70 to 80 % is hard to tell from the original for most photos.

An image that doesn't get smaller in its own format is kept as it is. Photos are turned upright as the camera took them, and the camera's data (date, place, device) isn't kept in the files written.

How to compress images

  1. Drop your images on the page or choose them: JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF or BMP.
  2. Keep each image's format, or make them all WebP or JPG.
  3. Set the quality (70 to 80 % is hard to tell from the original for most photos), the colors of PNGs, and a largest size if you like.
  4. Compare each image with its original by sliding between them, then download them one by one or in a ZIP archive.

Questions

How much smaller will my images get?

It depends on the image; photos straight from a phone or camera usually shrink the most, and making them no larger than 1920 or 1280 pixels saves even more. An image that doesn't get smaller in its own format is kept as it is.

How are PNGs compressed?

A PNG is written with at most 256, 128 or 64 colors. Logos and screenshots rarely change; photos may show a slight grain, and are often much smaller as WebP or JPG.

Are my images uploaded?

No. They're compressed by your browser, on your device, and never leave it.

Will I lose the photo's metadata?

Yes: photos are turned upright and their camera data (date, place, device) isn't kept, which also makes the files smaller and safer to share.
