Questions

Why can't I open a WebP image?

WebP is the format many websites use for smaller images, but some older programs, image editors and upload forms still don't accept it. As JPG, it opens everywhere.

Why did an image I saved from a website become WebP?

Websites often send WebP to browsers that support it, to load faster, so saving an image gives you the WebP file.

What about animated WebPs?

An animated WebP keeps its first frame in the JPG.

Is quality lost?

A little, as JPG compresses again; at 85 to 90 % it's very hard to see. For no loss at all, pick PNG, in a larger file.

Are my images uploaded?

No. They're converted by your browser, on your device.
