How to encode or decode a URL

  1. Choose Encode or Decode, and type or paste your text or URL.
  2. When encoding, choose a component (a query value, every reserved character encoded) or a whole URL (: / ? # & = kept), and spaces as %20 or +.
  3. Copy the result.
  4. Below, see the URL taken apart: protocol, host, port, path, query and fragment, its parameters decoded in a table.

Questions

What is percent-encoding?

Characters that can't appear in a URL, such as spaces, accents and & in a value, are written as % followed by their code, e.g. a space as %20 and é as %C3%A9.

Component or whole URL?

Encode a component for a value you put in a URL, such as a search query; encode a whole URL to clean up one you already have without breaking its structure.

Why do spaces become + sometimes?

HTML forms send spaces as +; choose Spaces as + to encode that way, or to read + as a space when decoding.

Is my URL sent anywhere?

No, it's encoded and decoded by your browser.
